Emission Control & Gas Cleaning for the Marine Industry

From conventional tankers to alternative fuel vessels running on LPG, LNG, methanol or ammonia, modern ships face increasing pressure to reduce harmful emissions. Ravebo designs and builds tailored wet scrubber systems for relief gas streams, cargo vapours and fuel switching processes, helping owners operate safely and comply with port and IMO requirements.

Why emission control matters at sea

Ports, coastal states and classification societies are tightening emission rules for vapours and relief gases, not just for main engine exhaust. Controlled gas cleaning around cargo handling, alternative fuels and tank operations is becoming standard practice.

  • Environmental compliance
Reduce VOC, BTEX, methane slip and toxic vapours in sensitive coastal areas.
  • Safety & explosion risk
Control flammable and toxic relief gases around deck and cargo operations.
  • Alternative fuels
Treat purge gases from NH₃, methanol, LPG and LNG fuel systems during switching and venting.
  • Port & terminal acceptance
Lower odour and gas cloud formation near jetties and bunkering locations.

Key emission challenges in the marine sector

Marine emission control is no longer limited to SOx from HFO combustion. Alternative fuels, cargo vapours and vent systems introduce new gas streams that require targeted treatment.

Top challenges onboard

  • VOC & BTEX from cargo vapours
Aromatics and VOC emissions during loading, stripping and tank venting on crude, product and chemical tankers.
  • Methane & VOC in relief gas
LPG/LNG relief streams with methane, propane/butane and reactive organics, increasingly restricted by ports.
  • NH₃ and methanol slip
Toxic or flammable vapours from fuel switching, purge operations and valve train vents on alternative fuel vessels.
  • Limited space & access
Tight engine rooms and deck layouts requiring compact, maintainable scrubber designs.

Ravebo scrubber solutions for Marine

We design single and multi-stage scrubbers using the right packing, chemistry and separation technology for your specific marine gas streams — from cargo vapours to alternative fuel relief gas.

Gas scrubbers for well stimulation vessels

Custom wet scrubbers for flowback and vent gases on well stimulation vessels, removing H₂S, BTEX, acid vapours and aerosols to protect crew, equipment and environmental compliance.

LPG/LNG & methanol relief gas treatment

Treatment of relief and vent gases from LPG, LNG and methanol systems to reduce methane slip, VOC load and odour while maintaining safe venting to mast.

VOC/BTEX removal from cargo vapours

Scrubbers for vapour return and vent streams on crude, product and chemical tankers, reducing BTEX and VOC emissions during loading, stripping and tank operations.

Fuel switching (NH₃, methanol, hydrogen)

Dedicated scrubbers for purge gas and vent streams from alternative fuel supply and return systems, capturing ammonia, methanol and related vapours during switching.

Custom marine gas cleaning systems

Tailor-made solutions for inert gas system vents, well stimulation support, syngas cleaning and other marine process emissions, engineered case-by-case.

VOC & relief gas control on a tanker vessel

A tanker operator faced tightening VOC limits in Northern European ports and needed to reduce vapour emissions from cargo handling and relief gas vents. Ravebo supplied a compact multi-stage scrubber system integrated with the existing vapour handling lines.

  • BTEX reduction at vapour return line and vent mast
  • Compatible with port requirements for VOC control and odour reduction
  • Compact, marine-grade build for limited deck space and rough conditions

Why partner with Ravebo for marine emissions

Ravebo combines industrial gas scrubbing know-how with marine engineering experience. We understand the reality of shipboard space, class requirements and operating conditions at sea.

  • Proven track record in VOC, BTEX, methanol and NH₃ scrubbing
  • In-house engineering & fabrication in the Netherlands for short lines and predictable quality
  • Tailor-made for each vessel – from retrofit projects to newbuild designs with naval architects

Marine & Ship Emissions FAQ

Do ships not already have scrubbers installed?
Many ships have exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) for SOx control on HFO. Our marine solutions focus on other gas streams: cargo vapours, relief gas and alternative fuel systems, which require different designs and chemistry than classic exhaust scrubbers.
Can you retrofit scrubbers on existing tankers and gas carriers?
Yes. We design compact, modular units that fit into existing deck and engine room layouts, with custom piping interfaces to current vapour handling and vent systems.
Do you also handle CO₂ capture on ships?
Our core expertise is in wet scrubbing of VOC, BTEX, methanol, ammonia and related components. We follow CO₂ capture developments closely and can support gas cleaning around pilot or demo systems.
